CENTRAL
SPORT HORSE BREEDERS GROUP
Integral to the Sport Horse Centre's development, a
Central Sport Horse Breeders Group was formed in February
2006. The aim of the group is clear:-
"To work together to breed, produce, market & sell top
class Sports Horses for the Global Market and establish
a commercially viable UK Sports Horse Industry whose
standards are recognised worldwide".
Annual membership
Annual membership cost is £25 per household and we would
ask please that whether you are already a horse owner/breeder,
or just at this stage have a general interest in Sports
Horse Breeding, you join now. A membership
form is attached which should be completed and return
to Nicola Burton ASAP. The group intends meeting at
least four times a year for exchange of information,
breeding advice and updates, study tours and educational
trips, grading and demonstration days. Details of member's
sports horse stock will be centrally recorded and sale
stock will be actively marketed by the Centre. A newsletter
will also be established.
Foundation mares available
Foundation mares for anyone looking to join the breeding
Group are available now and details are available of
pedigree stock currently for sale in Holland and the
UK.
Costing details
Several people have already asked for further costing
details, and whilst it is difficult to put a precise
cost on entry level for prospective breeders, (as much
depends on individual farm/facility circumstances, and
individual horses), the following may help as a guideline.
In general the better the pedigree of the foundation
mare and the better the grade of stallion used, the
higher the potential index level, (whether for dressage
or showjumping) for the sports horse produced and therefore
the greater your probability of producing a young sports
horse which will have a high commercial value by the
age of three/four. Please ring if you wish to discuss
in more detail or email patruck@weallcollect.com
or tel. 024 76302730.
Part ownership
Part ownership of a quality breeding mare may also be
available to members under the auspices of Central Sports
Horse Breeders Group. Details of Pedigree KWPN breeding
levels are also available if required, please email
for further details. The following is a guideline only.

Livery costs
Without own on-farm breeding facilities, with broodmare
and young stock kept at on-farm livery, add an additional
£1,200 on-farm livery cost to rearing a sports horse
to year three.
Initial
mares
Initial Mare cost assuming 12 year breeding life span
of mare, at average purchase price of £8,000 allow
£ 670 per annum mare replacement cost, however the
Dutch farming/breeding system usually relies on own
replacement mares to be bred and integrated into the
breeding programme once initial broodmares have been
purchased.
Show
jump sports horses
Market research shows the average price of a European
pedigree 3 to 4 year old show jump sports horses at
£9,200 and £11,000 for dressage bred. Not every 3
year old sport horse you produce each year will reach
this price, but a nice 3 year old , even if he or
she does not show top potential, if well bred, should
have a minimum sports horse value of £6,500 - £7,000
and top prospective pedigree 3 year old horses can
achieve £30,000 plus. Recent top price at the 3 year
old Euro dressage sale in Holland reached a high of
140,000 euros.
Foals,
yearlings and 2 year olds
In the UK there is currently little market demand
for foals, yearlings, 2 yr olds and it will be up
to us as a group, to try to attract buyers to this
end of the market, however the recent Dutch auctions
for pedigree sports horse foals at 4 months of age,
returned an average price of 12,000 euros, with several
well bred foals achieving 20,000 euros , the top price
being 64,000 euros. This I must emphasis was for top
pedigree foals. In general for the UK, youngstock
will need rearing to three years before they can be
produced and offered for sale.
Good
husbandry, controlled costs and sire selection
The road to breeding sports horses is not paved with
gold. As with anything concerning livestock, there
are unforeseen eventualities and possibly heartache
along the way. Good husbandry, combined with controlled
rearing costs are essential to the equation and top
quality foundation mares are the most important part
of any breeding strategy, combined with superior sire
selection. This said, equestrian sports are continually
gaining in popularity and the demand for top quality
sports horses is high. The average price paid by the
private purchaser is rising year on year. By working
together, with a clear strategy, to breed and produce
top quality sports horses, I am certain we can capture
a share of this growing world market.
On farm support for breeders
In
addition to the breeding support, training, sales
and marketing elements which will be provided by the
Sports Horse Centre, Group members Sam & Nicola Burton,
Wormleighton Hall, Warwickshire, will be offering
an on-farm sports horse rearing service to members
who do not have their own rearing facilities (such
as private competitors or business consortiums) but
would welcome the opportunity to join this initiative,
either to breed a sports horse for their own use or
produce sports horses for onward sale. Facilities
include all year round Broodmare care including foaling,
plus yearling and two year old rearing facilities.
Please email
Nicola for further details.
Olympic
Champions
It is only by working together that we will be able
to create a viable UK sports horse industry and produce
world class horses for the home & overseas market
and who a future Olympic Champion could well be bred
here in the Midlands! We look forward to you joining
us !
